Civil Service U12’s 4 Caerleon U12’s 3

Carlton 3

This turned out to be a thrilling encounter between 2 evenly matched teams.

Much of the first half passed without incident despite both sides enjoying good periods of possession. Much of our best play came down the right hand side, Joe Hindle and Dan Thomas combining well to create several half chances. Our build-up play was neat and tidy with good contributions from both Sam and Richard in midfield. However Civil’s more direct style of play paid dividends and a ball over the top caught our defence napping which resulted in a foul just inside the box. The penalty was well taken, 1 – 0 to Civil at half time.

We started the second half poorly and gave away 2 soft goals in the opening few minutes as a result of poor defending by the whole Team. 3-0. However to the boy’s credit their heads did not drop and as the second half progressed we started to take control of the game. Our efforts were rewarded by a fine individual goal by Carlton taking the ball down the right hand side before cutting back and unleashing a powerful shot into the bottom left hand corner. 3 -1.

With 10 minutes to go another great shot from Carlton reduced the deficit to 3-2. We piled on the pressure and missed a number of good chances. However, in the last minute Carlton managed to poke the ball home from close range for what seemed a great comeback. 3 -3.

As always though concentration is vital in football and we took our eye of the ball. A number of missed tackles enabled Civil to score the winning goal straight from the kick-off with virtually the last kick of the match.

In the end a disappointing result but well done to the boys for all their efforts. Congratulations to Carlton for scoring a hat-trick.

Match Report, 11th Mar 2007

Pill U12’s 1 Caerleon U12’s 1

Simon 1

This was only the second match we’ve played in 2007 and it showed as we started the match lethargically. All too often we gave the ball away and created very few clear cut chances. At half time the score was 0-0, with neither goalkeeper having much in the way of action.

We started the second half much better, our passing and movement improved and we created several good opportunities. It came as no surprise that following good passing in midfield, Ruari Donkin made a strong run down the left hand side and crossed for Simon Garay to rifle in a right foot shot from 10 yards for his first goal of the season. 1-0 to Caerleon.

As the second half progressed Pill began to get more control of the ball and increased the pressure. Initially our defence coped well and reduced Pill to very few clear cut chances thanks to some resolute defending from James Wood and Tom Arthur. As Pill pushed forward we produced some good counter attacking football, aided in particular by some good work down the left hand side by Harry Symons. However, the pressure from Pill finally told when they capitalised on a mistake in defence which allowed their striker to stab the ball home from close range. The closing minutes were exciting with both sides having chances to win the game but in the end a 1-1 draw was a fair result.

In summary this was a frustrating team performance. We need to get more consistency into our play; at times we played some nice football but more often than not we gave the ball away far too easily. We are a better team than we displayed during this match.
