FOOTBALL CENTRES, WHAT ARE THEY ?
The emergence of the many and varied private enterprise 'Football Centres' is causing concern for Junior Clubs so it is worth reflecting on what CJYFC provides.
CJYFC Coaches give their time to provide a high quality low-cost football experience for as many players as possible. CJYFC provides a Club Structure for boys and girls of the same or different ages to mix, play, develop their football skills and make friends, often school-mates.
Unlike any other club in Newport, CJYFC provides a 'Lifetime' progression for Players from Under 5 to Under 16 and onwards to Caerleon AFC's Youth and Senior Adult Teams. Newport District League provides us with weekly local fixtures so that things learned in Training can be tried in match situations without having to travel outside Newport.
All Coaches and Administrators of CJYFC are unpaid. CJYFC is non-profit making ie ALL income of CJYFC is returned to the players in the form of kit, equipment, trophies, trips etc. We have excellent sponsors that help minimise the cost to parents.
CJYFC Coaches complete Football Association of Wales (FAW) training in Coaching and First Aid and must complete Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks and periodic refresher training mandated by FAW and policed by Newport District League. Hence we can ensure children are safe at all times.
CJYFC Team Managers also spend a LOT of time on admin, player registration, handling subs, arranging Club events etc and usually have other roles on the committee (eg Fixture Secretary) which is not seen by players/parents at weekend training/matches.
The various Football Centres that now operate are profit-making franchises, usually with high fees, travelling expenses and mandatory training kit that must be purchased by Parents. Football Centre Coaches are usually associated with local Junior Clubs and often have their own private agenda to poach good players into one team hence eliminating the competition in Newport District League, contrary to the interest of all players (including the better ones!).
Football Centres often focus on niche skills rather than the full range of skills coached by CJYFC/FAW. There is often a false promise of 'being spotted' by Professional Clubs but in reality the tiny percentage of players with potential for a professional career are identified through the representative Schools football structure. There is no evidence that players attending private Football Centres have more success at professional level. Indeed, most Football Centres have a novelty factor and close after a few years.
It is vital that parents check the Coaching and First Aid qualifications and experience and CRB checks of Adults coaching at Football Centres as they will not usually be to the standard of CJYFC/FAW. We are concerned about long sessions conducted at some Centres as the FAW Child Welfare recommendations are no more than 1 hour sessions for young players, including regular drinks breaks
Generally, the CJYFC/FAW view is that for players pre-puberty, the more often they play (in whatever format) the better. Post-puberty (around 12 years old) awareness of over-use injuries must be considered. Therefore CJYFC does not at present discourage Players from attending Football Centres but Parents should always be aware that the benefits to the Football Centre owners/coaches are a higher priority to the Centre than benefits to the Players/Parents. We support the Newport County Academy but sometimes even their coaches are associated with local Junior Clubs and have used the Academy as a front to poach players. CJYFC players/parents have always resisted these approaches
CJYFC goes from strength to strength with a year-on-year increase in numbers of players and teams and new initiatives such as Soccer-tots and our Girls Squad. We hope Parents understand the vast benefits CJYFC offers to young players and that Parents will continue to provide the fantastic support we have received since we formed in 1988.
